Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Do you...
- regularly feel overwhelmed, stressed or exhausted?
- find yourself engaging in behaviors or situations you promised yourself you wouldn't go back to?
- find it difficult to stand up for yourself?
- consider procrastination your middle name?
- keep engaging in unhealthy relationships?
Do you know perfectly well what to do to change this, but keep ending up in the same vicious cycle? Then ACT may be for you!
WHat is ACT?
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that is focused on helping you to accept difficult thoughts, feelings, or experiences. By learning to accept circumstances, rather than getting stuck in resistance, ACT therapy encourages the growth of you psychological flexibility. This creates the clarity and balance to take value-based actions towards your goals.
The proven high success rate of ACT compared to other forms of psychotherapies, lies in the immediate committed action after recognizing the behavior without judgement. In this way, you can put your energy into healing instead of dwelling on the negative. It has been proven as a successful method to achieve consciousness and sustainable behavioral change.
How people get (to feel) stuck
Many people who feel stuck in their work or life, do one or more of the following:
They worry and overthink themselves into madness
They are not clear about what really matters to them
They don't act effectively or procrastinate
They are stuck in a rigid self-image
They believe what they think is "true"
They avoid discomfort
They keep stepping into the same circles of self-sabotage
You can probably imagine that this is not quite a recipe for success, if you want to live a rich and meaningful life. But to be realistic, we all suffer from this to a greater or lesser extent. For this reason, an ACT therapist always works from radical equality. As the metaphorical ACT method would say: "We are both climbing the mountain of our lives. The only difference is, that from my mountain I can oversee the mountain of my client well, which makes it easier to safely guide them to a higher level."
Six practical skills
In Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, we work with the 'Hexaflex'. It exists out of six skills, that you learn to practise and apply into your daily life to form a solid base.
- Being present: becoming acquainted with sensory experiences, here and now.
- Values: Knowing what matters to you and your loved ones
- Committed action: taking steps towards your goals, based on your values, even though experiencing discomfort.
- Self-as-context: Being kind and patient to yourself, by witnessing your feelings, thoughts and actions. (self-compassion)
- Defusion: Learning to notice the process of thought, rather than getting trapped in the content. Separating your identity from your thoughts.
- Acceptance: practising non-judgemental awareness and acknowledgement to internal and external events, rather than fighting them.

What does a session look like?
In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, we work with your requested theme in a flexible way. Since the method is based on mindfulness, there is room to adapt to what is present for you in the current moment. In that way, each session is tailored and no session is the same.
The abbreviation of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy is 'ACT' for a reason: you will talk little about events from the past. Instead, you will be put into ACTion, by working with concrete exercises. In this way, you train yourself to deal with the challenges you encounter in life in a balanced way.
In the first session, we start the exploration phase: I will ask you questions, to reflect on what your needs are. From there, you start to define your values and the direction you want to follow in life. I will teach you how to work with the six basic skills of ACT, to find your natural balance and development. Step by step, I guide you to the ability of taking sustainable and realistic committed actions, that give you the insights and confidence to develop and grow.
